Affinity Spaces on Campus
Men of Philo is a group/space for undergrad and grad students who self-identify as men or on the masculine spectrum. It provides a space for people to feel seen, chat, and connect with their peers.
Facilitated by Michael Hill Jr., Men of Philo is focused on restorative-transformative practices, trauma-informed practices, health and wellness education, and more.
Meetings are typically held in the Office of Purposeful Learning (Joyce 125) and include a cultural dinner.
DEC’s BIPoC Womxn’s Group is a group/space for undergrad/grad students who self-identify as womxn of color. It provides a casual setting to discuss different topics throughout the year, receive support, and plan fun activities.
This group is facilitated by Sarah Childs and Choeden Lama and meets either in the CWG (Alliot 206) or the Vermont Room (Alliot 212).
Dinner is also provided at each gathering from a local BIPoC and woman-owned business if possible.
SMC 1st is a group intended to connect, support, and provide programming directed toward first generation college students at SMC. It provides a space for students to talk about their college experiences and feel affirmed in their choices while providing resources and assistance in the college retention process.
Programming through SMC 1st has included mixers, where first generation students have the opportunity to feel validated through shared past experiences, paint and sips, apple picking, and museum visits. These programs are intended to educate and enlighten students while allowing them to engage in cultural activities both on and off campus.
