Current job title and employer and briefly describe what it is you do: I am a Postdoctoral Associate at Boston University.

In a few sentences, tell us about yourself: I was born and raised in Barbados and came to the US for undergrad. I’ve since been back and forth between the two countries working in public health and continuing my education. I completed my PhD in Molecular Epidemiology in 2018, and my focus throughout my career has been infectious diseases with an emphasis on health in the Caribbean and minority and immigrant communities in the US.

Please tell us about your Saint Michael’s experience: I came to Saint Mikes directly from Barbados, which was the biggest culture shock of my life. Not only was the weather a tough adjustment but it was hard to move from a place where everyone looked like me, to being a minority. However, it proved to be an experience that would truly enrich my life. It was the place that introduced me to the idea of pursuing a career in public health and it gifted some lifelong friendships.

What advice would you give to women students: It is not always easy, but it will always serve you to be yourself. Set boundaries both in your personal and professional life and stick to them. No is a complete answer. Do not be afraid to say it. Self-care is not just a buzz phrase, it is truly an important practice that will enrich your life.

What are some strategies that can help women achieve a more prominent role in their organizations: Be your biggest advocate. Everyone has their own priorities and it is not always you. It means that sometimes you may need to create your own opportunities. Don’t be afraid to reach out to peers and mentors. Depending on your field, a mentor is key and choosing a great mentor is an extremely rewarding experience for both parties.

What keeps you motivated and driven on a daily basis: I keep a note to myself that I read pretty often. A note that reminds me that I do all that I do so that my nephew will grow up in a world that does not try to dim his shine.

What woman most inspires you and why: Though this will sound cliche, my mother inspires me each and every day. She is unfailingly kind and moves through this world with grace. She worked hard to support all of my dreams and never gave me the idea that I could not do or be anything I wanted to be. I can only ever hope to be half the woman she is.
