    Former Director of MOVE

What involvement did/do you have with MOVE? What program did/do you volunteer with and/or lead? What years?
In the summer of 1988, I had privilege and opportunity to be the first full-time Director of Community Service at Saint Michael’s College. Working alongside Fr. Mike Cronogue and funded through a federal grant, we went to work to build a student centered service organization. Saint Michael’s had a long and celebrated past with student volunteer groups, including the renowned Fire & Rescue program and the former Crown & Sword Society. For this new effort we knew it important to create and offer a variety of different experiences – from the one-day events, to recurring service on a weekly or monthly basis. We also knew it would be important to appeal to all students, across all classes, and regardless to their current level of involvement with other groups. For me personally, I most valued our work with Habitat for Humanity and the work we did in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. Often working alongside with our Saint Michael’s College athletes, we spent nearly a year rebuilding and refurbishing a home for a local family. I also have great pride in the work Fr. Mike and I did to create the extended service projects during the traditional break times within the semester. Together we created opportunities in Hartford, CT, New York City, Washington, DC, and Selma, AL.

In what ways did/does MOVE impact you?
MOVE gave me purpose. Through the work I did with students, staff, and community members we were able to broaden our perspectives and gain a deeper appreciation for the opportunities we had been given. I believe my time at MOVE changed the trajectory of my life and strengthened my commitment to give to others. Because of MOVE, and in particularly Fr. Mike, I’m a better person today than I would have been had MOVE not been part of my life.

If you are an alumni, what influence does MOVE continue to have on your life today?
The experience of MOVE – traveling the country, seeing how others live, understanding better the challenges people face – makes me a better community member. The experience of volunteering has continued through my life in the work I’ve chosen to do and furthers the work I do today.
