Stephen R. Chely, Elmira, NY, died March 14, 2024.

Born and raised in Elmira and a graduate of Notre Dame High School there, he went on to receive his bachelor’s in English literature and poetry from Saint Michael’s.

After college, he lived in San Francisco, CA, before moving with his former wife to Stephen’s childhood home, Elmira, NY, where he worked for Hardinge, Inc. for over 30 years.

Stephen had a passion for music, writing, and poetry. He also loved to cook and had many specialties. His most cherished moments were on Keuka Lake and Anna Maria Island, FL, two special places that he loved sharing with his children and grandchildren. Those who knew him enjoyed his quick wit and humor.

Stephen was passionate about equality and dreamed of a world where everyone could live their truth and be their authentic selves, and he and his family were supporters of the Human Rights Campaign.

He is survived by two sons, a daughter, his former wife and friend Cheryl Guild and extended family.
