Norman J. Lacharite, ’53

Died: December 28, 2024
Class of 1953

Norman J. Lacharite, Winooski, VT, died December 28, 2024.

Norm spent nearly 40 years as a professor, administrator and finally director of the Saint Michael’s Applied Linguistics Department. Known affectionately by his family as Papa, he lived in Winooski for most of his life.

After earning his Saint Michael’s degree in French, Norm was drafted into the Army and stationed in Korea for most of his service time. After his service, Norm returned to the College and joined the Department of Applied Linguistics, focused on Teaching English as a Second Language to students from abroad. Professor Emeritus since his 1994 retirement, he was also a longtime chairman of the master’s program in Teaching English as a Second Language. He was a Fellow’s Club supporter of the College.

He met his eventual wife, Elizabeth Daly, at the College, and they married in 1958, raising two daughters. Daughter Ann had a serious illness that required constant care, which mom and dad provided without complaint until Ann’s death in1997.

The retirement years for Liz and Norm were filled with the joys of being part of the lives of their daughter, her husband and their grandchildren. Many friends near and far enriched their lives. Norm and his family were grateful to the staff and doctors of UVM Medical Center and Birchwood Rehab Center for their care and compassion.

His wife and daughter predeceased him. Norm is survived by a daughter and extended family.
