Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures Program Learning Outcomes

For graduates who successfully complete a French or Spanish major, they are assessed in three ways during the course of their program: 1) a 2.0 GPA or higher in their major required courses; 2) meeting expectations in their Capstone paper; and 3) successful performance on presentations in their Senior Capstone course.

French & Spanish Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the major, French and Spanish graduates are able to:

  1. Communicate effectively and appropriately through speaking and writing in the target language at the high intermediate or advanced level as established by American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) in a wide range of situations including: daily usage in a domestic or international setting; educational environments; study abroad; graduate school; and general professional contexts.
  2. Read, discuss with others, and independently explore significant works of literature and other forms of cultural production in the target language, while being attentive to the historical contexts, overall significance, and continued relevance.
  3. Examine and produce coherent analyses of cultural and literary topics through research and critical reflection, demonstrating relevant use of textual evidence and documentation.
  4. Produce accurate, well-crafted written work and polished public speaking using the results of their own research and the research of others.
  5. Reflect on the values of the cultures they have studied and been immersed in, and be able to draw reasoned comparisons to their own culture on important topics.
  6. Apply their advanced language abilities, cultural knowledge, and intercultural competency to pursue professional opportunities or graduate studies — in the United States or in a country where the target language is spoken.
  7. Use the language to enrich their lives by sustaining or expanding their personal interests; communicating and interacting with other people and communities; and allowing them to be conscientious, engaged global citizens.
