Making Sense of the 2024 Presidential Primaries: A Conversation with Geoffrey Skelley, Senior Elections Analyst at ABC News’s FiveThirtyEight
Geoffrey Skelley is a Senior Elections Analyst for ABC News’s FiveThirtyEight data journalism site. Geoff writes articles and appears on their politics podcast. He is often a “talking head” on ABC News online or on ABC News TV (national broadcasts) during election seasons in the U.S. (He has appeared on an episode of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah last year!) He intersects politics, media, and history in his work.
The American people vote for President of the United States every four years. 2024 is one of those years! In our current political climate, two opposing political parties exist: the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. In 2024, current President Joe Biden will likely run again on the Democratic ticket. Meanwhile, Republicans will have to choose their party nominee. While former Republican President Donald Trump has declared his intent to run again, other competitors in the party have emerged. So, how does this presidential primary process work? Geoffrey Skelley will answer this big question and more in an informative talk. He will provide an overview of the 2024 presidential primaries in November 2023, about two months before voting in the primaries begins, which will help listeners understand and contextualize the process they may have been hearing about in the news, but may not fully understand. Skelley will address common voter questions like:
- How do parties pick their presidential nominees?
- What role do voters play in that process?
- What are “caucuses” and “presidential primaries”?
- What or who created how this process works?
- How should the public “read” political polls to better interpret them?
- Why is this process starting way before 2024?
- Where do things stand in the 2024 Republican presidential contest?
