Amid a fanfare of cowbells, kazoos, and cheering, the Class of 2028 officially arrived on Saint Michael’s College campus on Aug. 22.

Orientation Leaders – the sophomores, juniors, and seniors responsible for this enthusiastic display, otherwise known as O-Leaders – held signs with messages such as “You Belong Here” and “Welcome Home” as they waved the incoming cars onto campus. Other O-Leaders stationed at first-years’ dorm buildings swarmed arriving families’ cars, swiftly unloading new students’ belongings and carrying them up to their rooms.

Move-In Day marked the beginning of Orientation weekend for the several hundred incoming first-year students. Orientation features annual traditions such as New Student Convocation, a first-year seminar panel discussion, an activities and clubs fair, and an event called “Connections” focused on building community. Many other activities planned throughout the weekend were geared toward helping new students bond with their classmates and begin experiencing life at Saint Michael’s.

Saint Michael’s Class of 2028 is comprised of incoming first-time undergraduates, transfer students, and international students. The class represents 28 states and eight countries, including the U.S., Canada, Hungary, Norway, Rwanda, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, according to data from Saint Michael’s Office of Admissions.

In the U.S., the farthest-from-Vermont place represented by an incoming student is Castro Valley, California. Meanwhile, the Class of 2028 also boasts 88 students from Vermont.

The most popular major among the new students who have already declared their course of study is Business Administration. More than 120 students in the incoming class also plan to play a varsity sport at Saint Michael’s.
