Student Spotlight: Kathleen Dean ’26
The Student Spotlight Series is a new feature to highlight Saint Michael’s students’ lives in all corners of campus. Students’ answers have been lightly edited for style and clarity.
Kathleen Dean ’26, from Auburn, Maine, is majoring in English and minoring in French and Philosophy.
What brought you to Saint Michael’s College?
I knew I wanted to attend a small, Catholic, liberal arts college. Many of the colleges I looked at were very similar, but Saint Michael’s stood out as one-of-a-kind when I visited on campus. I felt an excited energy on campus, and knew I wanted to be part of it. I remember talking to Carla, my field hockey coach, and she told me that “Saint Michael’s college students are not faint of heart; they are here for an adventure.” This stuck with me, and I decided I wanted to be part of the adventure.
Where do people see you on campus? (What are you involved in? How do you spend your time?)
I play on the varsity field hockey team, sing in the liturgical choir and participate in campus Ministries, give tours as an admissions ambassador, and coach in the Writing Center. When I’m not doing these things, I am usually in class, writing a paper, or hanging out with my friends!
What is your favorite thing about the academic experience at St. Mike’s?
My favorite thing about the academic experience at St. Mike’s is the opportunity to explore different areas of academics. A liberal arts education allows students to pursue areas of thought they might have never considered before. This was particularly beneficial to me because I entered college as an Exploratory Major.
What is your favorite thing to do on campus?
I don’t think I can choose just one favorite thing to do on campus! I love practicing field hockey outside on the Duffy Field, I love singing in the choir at Mass, and I love discussing literature in my classes!
How are you hoping your St. Mike’s education will prepare you for the future? (Do you have after-graduation plans?)
My St. Mike’s education will prepare me for the future by developing me as a well-rounded and confident individual. This will allow me to adapt to new and challenging situations after graduation. Saint Mike’s is preparing me to thrive in all domains of life after leaving campus.
