Library materials are selected and acquired based on collection management principles that support teaching at Saint Michael's College, with priority given toward purchasing information resources for students and support materials for faculty class preparation. The Library acquires materials in a variety of formats, including print materials (books, periodicals, maps), microform collections, video and audio recordings, CD-ROMs, full text databases and electronic indexes. These materials may be housed in the Library, or available on the network and the Internet. Library Liaisons Library Liaisons How to Submit an Order
You may submit requests in what ever way is most convenient for you: by phone call, by email, by sending us a book review or Web printout, a bibliography, a page from a newspaper, handwritten, etc. Orders marked RUSH and PERSONAL HOLD: Once an item is received and cataloged, the requestor will be notified and the item will be held at Circulation Desk. Resources are limited, therefore we need guidance from you on the priority of materials you are requesting. We ask that you give a priority rating for each of your purchase requests as follows:
If there are questions about your orders, either your liaison or the Acquisitions Department will contact you. Acquisitions Time Frames We will do our best to fill every order within the time frame requested, however we appreciate your patience with variables outside our control, such as availability of an item, shipping times and budget constraints. If funds are available, a request placed by April 15 will be charged to the current fiscal year. Requests placed after April 15 will be held until after the end of the fiscal year cutoff (June 30) and charged to the new fiscal year. Domestic books, videos, DVDs, etc.: Rush, Reserve, and Personal Hold orders generally take 2 weeks; regular orders take from 2 weeks to several months. Items from very small publishers and backordered titles will be among those orders that take longest. Foreign books, videos, etc.: Rush and reserve orders generally take 2-6 weeks; regular orders may take several months. Once again items from very small publishers and backordered titles will be among those orders that take longest. Out-of-print material: Occasionally we cannot find a vendor. Any help with locating a source for an out-of-print item will be greatly appreciated. Notification We do not send out notices when regular, reserve, or standing order items arrive. Because of the volume of requests received, the Library does not return original ordering materials (publisher's catalogs, flyers, etc.) to the requestor. We will contact you if we are unable to acquire the materials you requested. NOTE: We advise you to keep your own copies of your orders (before you submit them to the Library) in the event that you need to refer to them in the future. Textbooks Multiple copies, Class sets, Reserves If a book is requested for reserve for a class with more than 30 students, a second copy will be purchased at the request of the professor. Periodical Subscriptions Please see the Library's New Subscriptions Policy for information on how decisions are made regarding new subscriptions to individual periodical titles. Keep Us Informed
