news story image"On the Day of the Dead, God provided freedom of the dead to come back," explained Dr. Marta Umanzor, Saint Michael's College associate professor of modern languages. "That's why we provide food and drink for them," she said. Provisions are also supplied for babies who have died and make a visit, she said; traditionally we would have lots of milk and even diapers.

The professor and her students are collecting photographs and artifacts honoring deceased family members of students, faculty and staff of Saint Michael's College. They will use these items to create a Day of the Dead shrine to the deceased to be displayed on Monday, Nov. 2, in the Alliot Student Center lobby till Nov. 4.

Members of the Spanish class will be present on Monday, Nov. 2 from 11:45 a.m. till 12:15 p.m. to explain Day of the Dead customs. On Nov. 4th, from 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., the International Coffee Hour will celebrate the Day of the Dead altar. The display will be dismantled at 5 p.m. on Nov. 4.

There will be a Mass in Spanish on Monday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Saint Michael the Archangel, celebrated by the Rev. Marcel Rainville, SSE.

The public is invited to view the Day of the Dead display and to celebrate Mass on campus.
