Six Saint Michael's students spent Saturday, Oct. 3, on the third annual Foliage Walk for Greyhounds around Berlin Pond in Berlin, Vt., and raised $400 in donations for Northern Greyhound Adoptions of St. Albans. The money will go towards the dogs' dental care, vet visits, food and bedding.
"We love doing it because it makes the dogs so happy, and they're so adorable, and the students are learning how to handle dogs," said Katelynn Page, of Johnson, Vt., and Chapel Hill, N.C., co-coordinator of Cause
for Paws, the Saint Michael's College service program that runs the project.
Cause for Paws is one of two dozen service projects organized by the Saint Michael's Edmundite Mobilization for Volunteer Efforts (MOVE) office. The main focus of Cause for Paws is to promote animal awareness, and to aid the rescue center, a non-profit organization. Students in the program visit the greyhounds twice a week, as well as dogs at the Franklin County Humane Society in St. Albans once a week.
Participants in the Foliage Walk for Greyhounds were Allison Altman, a junior education major from Jericho, Vt., Christine Trombley, a sophomore psychology major from Richmond, Vt., Katelynn Page, a sophomore journalism major from Johnson, Vt., and Chapel Hill, N.C., Caitlin Wilkins, a junior history major from Westminster Station, Vt., Rachel Rainville, a sophomore psychology major from Franklin, Vt., and Megan Durocher, a sophomore psychology major from East Haven, Vt.
