news story imageJason Busic, who earned his doctorate in Spanish literatures and culture from The Ohio State University in June 2009, has been named assistant professor of modern languages at Saint Michael's College, starting this fall semester.

A specialist in Early Modern Iberian Spanish Literature and Culture, Dr. Busic will be teaching Spanish language courses, Spanish conversation, possibly Caribbean poetry, and Spanish Phonetics. His dissertation is titled "Saving the Lost Sheep: Religion and Culture in Pedro Guerra de Lorca's Catecheses mystagogicae pro aduenis ex Secta Mahometana: Ad Parochos, & Potestates."

An experienced teacher, Dr. Busic taught Spanish literature
courses at Ohio State, as well as beginning and intermediate Spanish language courses. At the same time he taught Spanish I and III at Brookhaven High School in Columbus, and earlier at Ohio University in Athens.

"I was looking for a small undergraduate college with a focus on teaching, as well as research," he said, "and Saint Michael's has a strong commitment to both aspects." He added, "I am very much drawn to the Catholic mission and focus on service at this college, the open faith communications."

Dr. Busic earned his bachelor's degree summa cum laude from Ohio University in 2002; his master's from Ohio University in 2004, and his doctorate from Ohio State in 2009, all the degrees in Spanish literature.

His interest in Spanish began with a study abroad experiences in Guatemala and in Nicaragua, both of which were prompted by his interest in liberation theology in Latin America. His work as a volunteer at a Catholic orphanage in Nicaragua greatly improved his Spanish speaking skills, and taught him much more.

"I'm most interested in making sure I can really involve my students in exciting material," he said, about his teaching goals.

Dr. Busic and his wife Anna live in Essex Junction. They have three sons, Job, age 5; Samuel, 2 and a half, and Elijah, four months. His sons love swimming in Vermont's many streams and he and his wife enjoy hiking, rock climbing and canoeing, when they get a rare chance.
