A leader in the banking industry in Vermont and nationally, Mr. Boutin, a 1969 graduate of Saint Michael's, celebrated the 40th anniversary of his graduation at the Reunion.

"We are pleased to honor a man who is the walking definition of commitment to community, church, family and college," said Patrick Gallivan, Saint Michael's vice president for institutional advancement, in citing Mr. Boutin as Alumnus of the Year.

Joseph Boutin led The Howard Bank, Merchants Bancshares and Merchants Bank as president, before retiring. He also appeared frequently as an industry spokesperson on the NBC Nightly News and Good Morning America.

Mr. Boutin was cited for service in literally scores of boards including those of Fletcher Allen Healthcare, The Rutland Regional Medical Center, The Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the United Way of Rutland and Chittenden counties. A number of Joe Boutin's family members, siblings and children, graduated from Saint Michael's, and his father Bernard Boutin, a member of the Saint Michael's class of 1945, served as president of the college. Joe Boutin and his wife Dale are residents of Burlington. They have four children and six grandchildren.

Saint Michael's College, founded in 1904 by the Society of St. Edmund and headed by President John J. Neuhauser, is identified by the Princeton Review as one of the nation's Best 368 Colleges. A liberal arts, residential, Catholic college, Saint Michael's is located just outside of Burlington, Vermont, one of America's top college towns and less than two hours from Montreal. As one of only 270 institutions nationwide with a prestigious Phi Beta Kappa chapter on campus, Saint Michael's has 2,000 full-time undergraduate students, some 500 graduate students and 200 international students. The college is currently listed as one of the nation's Best Liberal Arts Colleges in the 2009 U.S. News & World Report rankings.
