Fine Arts

Play rehearsalThe Fine Arts Department houses the disciplines of fine and performing arts: art, dance, music, speech communication and theatre. With a faculty of academics who are professional, producing artists in each of these areas, the department provides a broad-based understanding of the practice, the literature, and the theory of each discipline.

We offer majors and minors in the areas of Art, Music and Theatre.

Our fine arts graduates have gone on to work in such fields as museum administration, acting, composing, music publishing, fashion design, graphic arts and education.

African Drum classSaint Michael's has a long history of commitment to the fine arts, both in the academic area and in co-curricular activities. Fine arts majors may emphasize art, drama, music or an approved combination of the three. They may also become certified in music education, art education and theater arts through a cooperative program between the fine arts and education departments.

Saint Michael's maintains a variety of fine arts facilities. The McCarthy Arts Center houses facilities for music and drama. The proscenium-type theater [virtual tour] is the scene of many student and professional Print-making classproductions, including a professional summer program with Equity Actors. The recital hall [virtual tour] accommodates an audience of 337, and the space includes independent lighting and sound systems. Adjacent to the recital hall is a large rehearsal room used by each of the performance groups. There are also a number of small practice rooms with pianos for student use.

The Sloane Art Center on the College's North Campus is the home to the art department, and contains several classrooms, a photography darkroom and other creative spaces.  The McCarthy Arts Center also houses an art gallery for showing student works.

The Department sponsors student groups in each of the major disciplines; Drama Club, Chorale, Madrigal Singers, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and Dance Ensemble. All groups perform on campus, and the music groups also tour extensively.
